This source looked specifically into what's expected from a graduate in a particular role. Although my goal is to be an advertising account executive, I found that the role of an advertising account planner may be even more fitting to my own skills and strengths. The skills this article outlines are very similar to ones covered by targetjobs.co.uk, however this role seeks people with a knack for planning an organising, which I personally love and do every day.

Having already said that most of the job search websites are clearly paying for the adverts on Google, it's still impossible to only rely on your University's job search section. When I researched the best websites, the majority of people praised jobs.theguardian.com, as it's known and respected, the adverts are controlled, and the number of jobs posted is very high. Of course, there are more, such as indeed.co.uk and thedrum.com, however The Guardian’s website is a personal favourite of…

Although I will be graduating with a Media degree, I think the info on graduates of Marketing is still relevant, especially because throughout the tree years of university I took 4 modules outside of the school of media that were aimed at marketing: Introduction to Marketing, Professional Communications, Advertising and Consumption, and Business Enterprise. Having these modules in mind, it can be seen that 49.5% of the grads in 2014 went into careers in marketing, advertising and PR.

Although as students, we rarely have extra cash, most still hope that the graduate life and working full time would mean more money. Having decided to move to London, I looked into the usual advertising salaries, which range from £18k to £22k, meaning that a mediocre monthly salary is around £1.75k. Transitioning from a student in a small city to a graduate in the capital of the UK can prove intimidating, as shown in the graph, but hey, we all lived on way less in university and survived!

HECSU provides a wonderfully insightful overview of the employability rates, jobs, and salaries of university graduates depending on their courses. Looking into media studies grads from 2014, out of 79.1% of grads working in the UK, 14.7% have jobs in marketing, advertising, and PR. Although this may not seem like much, the skills gained in media studies match those needed for a job in advertising, and thus I feel that I could prove myself valuable in an advertising agency with a media…
