Wonderful Places | Amazing Pictures - Amazing Pictures, Images, Photography from Travels All Aronud the World - Brazil
Brazil--in Rio De Janeiro, there is a saying, that "The Poor live high, and the Rich live low." This, because the monsoon rains wash the houses of the mountainous favelas off the mountainsides, while the rich remain safely dry in their homes on the flatland of the city.
Brazil's Favelas- there's something about houses on hills that's intriguing; I know it's dangerous- I will go with a friend who has family there- one day
Brazil - Rio de Janeiro. Facts about Brazil: Area: 8,511,965 sq km. One-half of the land surface and population of South America. The world’s fifth largest country in both area and population. Population: 195,423,252. Capital: Brasilia. Official language: Portuguese. Languages: 193.
Favela ~ A favela is the term for a shanty town in Brazil, most often within urban areas. The first favelas appeared in the late 19th century and were built by soldiers who had nowhere to live. Some of the first settlements were called bairros africanos (African neighbourhoods). This was the place where former slaves with no land ownership and no options for work lived. Over the years, many former black slaves moved in. (rePInned 091513TLK)

"Haiti" – A drama of the black Napoleon by William Du Bois – With the New York cast. (1938)...I've not seen this, but wonder if it can be found?
François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture (May 20, 1743 – April 7, 1803) was the leader of the Haitian Revolution. His military genius and political acumen led to the establishment of the independent black state of Haiti, transforming an entire society of slaves into a free, self-governing people. The success of the Haitian Revolution shook the institution of slavery throughout the New World.
