"Old Abe" was adopted as a mascot for Co. C 8th Wisconsin "the Eagle Regiment". During battles, the bird would fly over the fighting and screech at the enemy. The Confederates tried in vain to capture or kill "the Yankee Buzzard", knowing the impact it would be to its regiment. A replica of this brave eagle stands on display at the Wisconsin state capital.
