The George Cross (GC); the second highest award in the UK. Instituted in 1940 it is still active. Awarded to both military personnel and civilians; the most recent awards have been in 2014 and 1976, respectively. The GC replaced three discontinued medals and is comming with a live annuity. The total number of recipients is 407, including two collective awards for the island of Malta and the Royal Ulster Constabulary.
