46227 'Duchess of Devonshire' at a grey and misty Crewe North shed. Built by the LMS at Crewe Works and delivered in streamlined red in June 1938 the casing was removed in February 1947. She was, with 46231 and 46232 in December 1962, the first of the class to be withdrawn and was scrapped at Crewe in November 1963. Photo by Keith Long

46503 "Solomon Islands" : Ex-LMS 4-6-0 5XP Jubilee class No 45603 'Solomon Islands' passes Coventry No 3 signal cabin light engine. Built as LMS No 5603 by the North British Locomotive Company in May 1935 it remained in service until December 1962 when it was withdrawn from Nuneaton shed to be scrapped during February 1963 at Crewe works.
