Strange Fruit”, the song about black lynching in the south made famous by blues singer Billie Holiday, was originally a poem written by Abel Meeropol, a Jewish schoolteacher from the Bronx. It was a huge protest for Billie to sing this song to all white audiences, but she did, often facing angry shouts and walkouts from her performances. She risked her life to sing the truth. #billieholiday

Billie Holiday- not only my favorite female singer, a style inspiration as well.
Billie Holiday When Holiday joined Count Basie in 1937 and then Artie Shaw in 1938, she became one of the very first black women to work with a white orchestra, an impressive accomplishment of her time.
