Billie Holiday was known for her bold presence, her tall physical stature. She emphasized this by wearing clothes that transfixed audiences in understated, purposeful ways. She loved a beautiful gown and accessorizing it perfectly.

Billie Holiday. "If you find a tune that’s got something to do with you, you just feel it, and when you sing it, other people feel it, too,” Holiday once explained. According to the Penguin Encyclopedia of Popular Music,”She was the first and is perhaps still the greatest of jazz singers, if the essence of jazz singing is to make the familiar sound fresh, and to make any lyric come alive with personal meaning for the listener.” (Encyclopedia.com.)

Billie Holiday. A woman with a traumatic childhood, an unloving family and was forced into prostitution. She used her talent and sang her way to fame. Loved for her individual style and phrasing she became the queen of blues recognised for her signature mechalcholic ballads. Her life was cut short after several abusive husbands and an addiction to drugs. The worls has never been the same. #womenwhochangedtheworld

Billie Holiday ( April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. Critic John Bush wrote that Holiday "changed the art of American pop vocals forever." She co-wrote only a few songs, but several of them have become jazz standards, notably "God Bless the Child", "Don't Explain", "Fine and Mellow".

Billie Holiday is iconic. Her idiosyncratic voice echoes an era. Holiday's recordings are evocative of a period best depicted in a novel like "The Day of The Locust." I feel I should be ironing my shirt while sweat drips down my forearms as a cigarette dangles from my lips an overhead fan whirls a hot breeze that makes the air dank with the odor of baked dust. I listen to her and I smell the sorrow and the sadness and I wipe the sweat from my untoiled brow. I listen and I hear history.

Richard Brody on John Szwed’s new book, “Billie Holiday: The Musician and the Myth”:In general, the desire of even the most discerning critics, such as Szwed, to separate art and life, to analyze the formal traits of works as if they were dissociable from the experience and the emotions that inspire them and that they convey, is both noble and doomed—noble, because artists deserve to be honored for their achievements, and doomed, because the formal and systematic nature of those achievements isn
