Eleanora Harris - Billie Holiday (1915-1959) - is best known as a jazz singer but she was an accomplished blues singer too. Lady Sings the Blues was the title of her autobiography. Holiday once remarked: "I hate straight singing. I have to change a tune to my own way of doing it. That's all I know."

Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Fagan ; April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and musical ... The first popular jazz singer to move audiences with the intense, personal feeling of classic blues, Billie Holiday changed the art of American pop vocals forever.
"Whenever I'd go see her, I always asked Billie to sing 'I Loves You, Porgy,' because when she sang 'don't let him touch me with his hot hands,' you could almost feel that shit she was feeling. It was beautiful and sad the way she sang that. Everybody loves Billie." ~ Miles Davis on Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday didn't write that many of her songs, but her gift, like that of an inspired classical musician, was in the interpretation. Her voice summoned that which was dramatic, urgent and necessary as if from the center of the earth. Today's politically-minded performers could take inspiration from her protest music; she knew that imagery and real soul impact listeners more strongly than corny, overly-dogmatic messages.
Billie Holiday - See my pin about Van Gough; the world was too much for this genius, this marvel. You can fall into a Billy Holiday song and think soft sweet thoughts and then you can hear the truth; she was so brave when she sang Strange Fruit. It is unbelievable that Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, all the great jazz men et al could not enter certain restaurants, hotels and so on. We have so much to answer for - and the sins continue.
