BILLIE HOLIDAY. 21 Powerful Quotes That Capture The Magic Of Music
Music - Billie Holiday quote
Billie Holiday. A woman with a traumatic childhood, an unloving family and was forced into prostitution. She used her talent and sang her way to fame. Loved for her individual style and phrasing she became the queen of blues recognised for her signature mechalcholic ballads. Her life was cut short after several abusive husbands and an addiction to drugs. The worls has never been the same. #womenwhochangedtheworld

Billie Holliday. " If you copy, it means you're working without any real feeling. No two people on Earth are alike, and it's got to be that way in music or it isn't music."
Billie Holiday cambiaba los tonos para ajustarlos a su forma de entender el jazz y le quitaba las líneas rectas a las canciones. Billie Holiday by Dennis Stock, 1958.
Billie Holiday, by Dennis Stock, 1958. No doubt, she will always be one of my favorites; the life, beauty, loss, & pain in her voice is tangible. Gone at 44, much too soon. May she eternally R.I.P. (April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959)

I have the ability to sing with emotion and feeling, but if you say I sound like Billie Holiday, that's cool. Let's look at who Billie was: she was this person, this singer, this beautiful diva who could move the audience with the slightest gesture of her hand. ~ Erykah Badu / Photo: Billie Holiday, 1946

Billie Holiday (photo by Michael Ochs Archives .01 Dec 1946), (born Eleanora Harris, April 7, 1915–July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer/songwriter. She had a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. She co-wrote only a few songs, but several of them have become jazz standards, notably "God Bless the Child," "Don't Explain," "Fine and Mellow," and "Lady Sings the Blues."

Billie Holiday. "If you find a tune that’s got something to do with you, you just feel it, and when you sing it, other people feel it, too,” Holiday once explained. According to the Penguin Encyclopedia of Popular Music,”She was the first and is perhaps still the greatest of jazz singers, if the essence of jazz singing is to make the familiar sound fresh, and to make any lyric come alive with personal meaning for the listener.” (Encyclopedia.com.)

Perfection personified: Lady in Satin by Billie Holiday with the Ray Ellis Orchestra. One hasn't fully experienced life until they have let the emotions of repeated listenings of Billie's final album wash over them.
Sunday, 29 April - Billie Holiday, Lady in Satin (1958). Fav song: I'm a Fool to Want You.
Billie Holiday – Lady in Satin (1958) – Billie Holiday said this album, accompanied by Ray Ellis' string orchestra, was her personal favorite. However, many other people did not agree with her. It was recorded 17 months before her death. There are certainly some beautiful and emotionally touching songs and portions of songs here. “But Holiday's voice was essentially gone by 1958… (Scott Yanow, AllMusic).” Nevertheless, I encourage you to listen to it. I enjoyed it again today, 4/24/2014).
