TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE: JAZZ`S FIRST DIVA: BILLIE HOLIDAY: In her difficult early life, Holiday found solace in music, singing along to the records of Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong. She followed her mother who had moved to New York City in the late 1920s and worked in a house of prostitution in Harlem for a time. Around 1930, Holiday began singing in local clubs and renamed herself "Billie."

African-American flappers in fur and silk stockings. Flappers were a "new breed" of young Western women in the 1920s who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking, treating sex in a casual manner, smoking, driving automobiles, and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms.

Flapper Dress, Norman Hartnell: 1924-1926, embroidered satin. "This... dress in a Chinese style is one of Norman Hartnell's earliest known designs. Hartnell opened his couture house in Mayfair in 1923 and rapidly gained a reputation for making exquisite evening gowns. There is a strong streak of theatricality in all his clothes and Hartnell began his design career working for the theatre. He continued to design lavish gowns for actresses to wear on and off the stage throughout his life."
