So, I mixed up my inks, and bought some travel sized spray bottles to put them in. There are quite a lot of  posts around the internet at the moment for using spray paints with kids, more particularly using trigger sprays outdoors

let students paint paper with watercolors, wet on wet, similar colors. Let dry and cut into triangles. Students pick triangles and glue down randomly, leaving white around each one. Maybe try with black or other color background? Maybe an end of year project.

What makes this work, besides the tight color relationship in the blues, is the outlining of the multiple layers. This could be a handsome project for very young children if you control the palette when they create the papers.
