The Kyrgyz, also spelled Kyrghyz and Kirghiz, are a Turkic people living primarily in Kyrgyz Republic. The Kyrgyz live also in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia and China. They form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. There are more than 145,000 Kyrgyz in China. Kyrgyz are predominantly Muslims of the Hanafi Sunni school.
