Lavoisier and His Wife "One of the greatest portraits of the 18th cen. Lavoisier is known for his pioneering studies of oxygen, gunpowder, & water. The illustrations were prepared by his wife, who is believed to have studied with David (a portfolio of her drawings rests on the armchair). Through his post as commissioner of gunpowder, Lavoisier was involved in a scandal that led him to withdraw the painting from the Salon of 1789. Despite his service to the Revolution, he was guillotined."
