Solid Fordite cabochon, known as Detroit Agate. Not an agate, just a happy accident! The original material was created many years ago at the Ford Rouge Plant outside of Detroit, Michigan. Layers & layers of paint overspray built up on metal racks that transported new car bodies through the paint shop and into the oven where each coat was baked hard, from the black and brown enamel of the late 1940's, to the colorful lacquers of the 1960's, right up to the vibrant base coats of the late 1980's
Fordite, also known as Detroit agate, is old automobile paint which has hardened sufficiently to be cut and polished. It was formed from the build up of layers of enamel paint slag on tracks and skidson which cars were hand spray-painted (a now automated process), which have been baked numerous times. In recent times the material has been recycled as eco-friendly jewelry.
