The unusual name of Ilona is common only in areas of Hungary, Austria, and Finland. I did a name study on it because the usual meaning given was as a cognate of Helen. Since Hungarian is a language with very different roots than Greek or any western languages, I found that Finnish ( related by some sources to the Hungarian) has a meaning of a carrier of fragrance, and its byproduct, joy.
