Liu Yiqian, Chinese multimillionaire shattered records in the art world by buying a rare Ming Dynasty wine cup for £20 million, and uses his new purchase to drink tea. This wealthy art collector from Shanghai, bought the 500-year-old porcelain treasure during an auction at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong in April 2014. Liu sipping tea from his multi-million pound acquisition – immediately turned the businessman into a figure of scorn among some.
The decanter (of which only one exists in the world) was first unveiled in Paris in April and is currently completing a tour of major cities round the globe including Madrid, London, Moscow, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Singapore as well as Hong Kong. Destined to reach New York in November, it will be auctioned by Sotheby’s with all proceeds going towards 'charity: water' a non-profit organization that promotes clean drinking water in developing nations.
