The Thames Tunnel, the first sub-aqueous tunnel in the world opened 25 March 1843. Built by Sir Marc Isambard Brunel, the tunnel is 396m long. Originally a pedestrian tunnel, it was sold to the railways in the 1860s and now forms part of the the East London line on the London Underground system. The tunnel is Grade II listed and has been designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. ICE Archive has M I Brunel's diaries and the Chief and Resident Engineers' reports.
