Scientists published findings in the Archives of General Psychiatry identifying the first clear evidence that smaller amygdala volume is associated with PTSD, regardless of the severity of trauma. But there's still a chicken-or-the-egg question:Is the physiological difference caused by a traumatic event, or does PTSD develop readily in people who naturally have smaller amygdalas? Fear induced by trauma hypersensitizes the amygdala to danger causing a volume increase during stressful events.
We each have a part to play in the fight against PTSD and *for* our heroes and families. Please take time today (June 27th, National PTSD Awareness Day) and every day to get informed, get involved, and make a difference in the lives of those who have served our country!
