Plans are moving forward to improve the treatment of research chimpanzees, but over a hundred thousand research primates are still in unlivable conditions for such social and curious species. Female chimpanzees carefully nurture their young. Babies can grasp their mother's fur to ride on the mother's back at about 6 months. After they are weaned, chimpanzees begin to build their own sleeping nests out of vegetation and not use their mother's nest anymore. Young chimpanzees stay with their mother for about 7 years.

Read about the "Cle Elum Seven" on the sanctuary's website (each of the chimps has his or her own Facebook page too!), and learn about the sanctuary's "Primate Patrol," a program that advocates against the use of primates in entertainment.
