Woodward Avenue, Detroit, 1917, and, as you might imagine, there are cars everywhere - after all, this is the Motor City, the place that put so much of the world on wheels. I can't think of Detroit without thinking of Chicago and St. Louis as well, brick cities dotted every mile or so with (brick) Catholic Churches next to their (brick) parochial schools. Perhaps that's due to the fact that I grew up next to one of those great brick churches in Minneapolis.
