Over the course of the story he suffers a series of traumatic experiences: a clandestine love affair that tears apart the family with whom he lives & years later, he serves on the Western Front in the very area where he experienced his great love he battles amidst the blood and gore of the trenches.....

    Birdsong (2012): The action moves between 1910 and 1916, telling the story of Stephen Wraysford (Eddie Redmayne), a young Englishman who arrives in Amiens in Northern France to stay with the Azaire family and falls desperately in love with Isabelle Azaire (Clémence Poésy). They begin an affair, but the relationship falters. Years later, Stephen finds himself serving on the Western Front in the very area where he experienced his great love. Birdsong is based on the novel by Sebastian Faulks.

The Wingless Bird (1997) Mini-Series - 7/10 ---- This is like a soap drama among period drama still I liked it. I found the aristocrat's love for the shopkeeper's daughter less realistic, and some other issues but I loved Agnes Conway's character.

British TV Series:" Foyles War". This is "Must See TV"! Good stuff!
