The Elrod House - 1968. Palm Springs, Calif., one of the architect John Lautner's most famous private homes. It is most famous for its use in the film Diamonds Are Forever (Sean Connery) as character Willard Whyte's home.
#GoAltaCA | Palm Springs Modernism - John Lautner's Elrod House is an example of his 'free architecture,' where architecture and nature are combined. When the house was built, the soil was excavated but the rocks were kept in place. These rocks are part of the interior of the house and run straight through the walls and windows. You might recognize the house from the James Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever.

With my beloved city of San Francisco in a frenzy about the possibility of snow tonight, I keep thinking of warm places – my favorite warm desert town being Palm Springs. The Palm Springs Modernism Show was last week and I must say that I am rather disappointed that I missed out again this year….note to self, get it together for next year! Palm Springs is a magical place for me on several levels. It is the first place I went with my boyfriend (now husband) when I was falling madly in love with him. Him being a design enthusiast and having so much knowledge of mid-century and modern design, it was insane to see Palm Springs through his eyes. I fell in love with that city on that special trip as well. That was nine years ago and since then we have taken countless trips down – sometimes for the day, sometimes for days on end….and every time we visit our favorite architectural spots and places. While this is about a 5% glimpse at my favs of Palm Springs I hope its enough to take the chill off your Winter day/night and give you something gorgeous to look at! Albert Frey House II is basically my favorite piece of architecture. It defines Palm Springs mid-century modern design and the thought process behind the house and how it was built into its surrounding landscape is inspiring. On my first weekend to PS with my (now) hub we hiked up the hill and sat on the rock outside the bedroom....looking down at PS while Jim told me all about Albert Frey's impact and contribution to the city. Check out this book by Albert Frey to get the 411… Richard Neutra’s Kaufman House as shot by Slim Aarons. Can I be that girl? Right now?? as shot by me - not Slim. Obvi. Elrod home by John Lautner…..just a fantastic piece of work. Rest of these shots were shot on my honeymoon….almost two years ago! lobby @ the ace hotel pool side - viceroy tram station as design by Albert Frey viceroy blue skies, palm trees + bougainvillea = palm springs random radness. viceroy @ night the hideaway - first date weekend :) And then there is Jonathan Adler's adorable "Parker"....next place we are staying! the cutest lemonade stand EVER. one for you and one for me! love all the textures who wants to drink in a marble encased bar? I do! Soundtrack......something by Bing of course - a frequent Palm Springs-er:

Continuing our series where we ask our favorite architects and designers about the three buildings that most inspire and impress them, we turn to Erich Schoenenberger of su11 architecture + design. Schoenenberger most recently impressed us with his and his partner Ferda Kolatan's design for a 620-square-foot apartment in New York City for a family of four, which appeared in our March 2011 issue and featured a serpentine floor-to-ceiling wall of laminate cabinets. Asked to pick his three favorite structures, he globe-hopped from Mexico to Spain to Italy—where he raved about a most popular structure, the Casa Malaparte, also selected by Page Goolrick for her "Three Buildings" list. Reflecting on what these three buildings have in common, he said: "Sagrada Familia and the Lautner house share a dynamic space experience; the Lautner house and Casa Malaparte both have a great interrelationship of building and landscape/views." The iconic Chemosphere house was Built in 1960 and designed by architect John Lautner. This eight-sided house in the Hollywood Hills was once named “the most modern home built in the world” by the Encyclopedia Brittanica.
Space age architecture "Disappearing space seems to me to be the most durable and endurable and life-giving quality in architecture." - John Lautner American architect John Lautner (1911-1994) is responsible for some of the most original buildings of the space age and, indeed, the 20th century. The residences he designed in the Los Angeles area, including the Chemosphere House and the Silvertop, are synonymous with the hopes and dreams of an entire era.
John Lautner's Chemosphere House "the most modern home built in the world" and site costs
The Chemosphere house has been called "the most modern home built in the world" by the Encyclopaedia Brittanica. The futuristic silver octagonal structure is perched atop a 30-foot concrete pole, making it look just like a UFO perched for takeoff. Today it's owed by Benedikt Taschen, of the German book publishing company of the same name who had it restored, earning him an award from the Los Angeles Conservancy. Right on! Located just east of Laurel Cyn, south of Mulholland Dr.

Edgeland Residence by Bercy Chen Studio is an interesting approach to modern house design in that it utilizes the Native American Pit House concept. A Pit House is typically sunken in the ground taking advantage of the earth’s thermal changes and shelter to offer regulated temperatures.
Located in an abandoned industrial zone in Texas, The Edgeland House by Bercy Chen Studio recreates the traditional Native American “pit house” and adds a dose of sustainable technology, including a truly exceptional green roof. In fact, the roof is so green that it almost entirely disguises the house!

Located in Palm Springs, California, the Kaufmann House was originally designed by architect Richard Neutra in 1946. The restoration returned the residence to its initial form, size, and aesthetic integrity. An important challenge of the restoration was to re-create the dialogue between nature and sculpture, a difficult undertaking in an area that has grown from a rugged desert into a suburban residential neighborhood.

Palm Springs, California lays in the Coachella valley surrounded by mountains and deserts. It has long been an escape for Angelenos and Hollywood starlets since the early 1900's. Less than 2 hours away from Los Angeles, Palm Springs feels like another world...a Mid Century Modern world, in fact. It boasts what is called the largest and best preserved architecture from the Mid Century. John Lautner John Lautner (1911-1994) was an American architect who practiced for more than 55 years, designing homes in and around Los Angeles, California. Lautner was born in Marquette, Michigan. His first experience with building came when he helped his father and mother build a chalet-type retreat on a hillside overlooking a lake there. He received a degree in English from Northern State Teachers College (now Northern Michigan University) and then became an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright for six years. In 1937 he supervised the construction of two Wright projects, and in 1939 he opened his own practice in Los Angeles. His first project was a home for his own family, which earned him high praise from architectural critic Henry-Russell Hitchcock. Other well known projects include Silvertop, the Chemosphere, the Sheats/Goldstein residence and the Elrod residence. He also designed several commercial buildings. Lautner's work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in the United States and abroad. His buildings have been featured in countless publications, in a documentary film on his life and work, in James Bond and Diehard films, among others, and in commercials for television. In 1970, he was made a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects for Excellence in Design. He also received the Gold Medal from the Los Angeles AIA chapter in 1993 for his lifetime achievement.
