Detail from "The Death of the Earl of Chatham" by John Singleton Copley, Family members are depicted clustering round the stricken Earl, including Pitt himself and his brother John. Lord Mahon, later the 3rd Earl Stanhope, was their brother-in-law. James Charles (1761-80), a naval officer, was the youngest brother. This is the only portrait I know of him. In reality, neither he nor John were present on this occasion.
