Counter attack: On Jan. 8, 2010, the Arab Israeli village of Abu Gosh served up this giant satellite dish full of hummus, weighing over 4 tons — about twice as much as the previous record set by Lebanon just months earlier.
LG sets ambitious 3D TV sales targets | While many in the TV industry remain on the fence regarding the 3D TV 'revolution' it looks like the major telly manufacturers are all set to unveil new 3D TV product line-ups at CES early next month, with LG already announcing some ambitious targets for 3D in 2010. Planet rings could be behind the formation of solar system satellites
Two French researchers have recently proposed the first ever model explaining how the great majority of regular satellites in our solar system were formed out of planet rings. The model, the only one of its kind, was first tested in 2010 on Saturn's moons. It seems to account for the present distribution of "giant" planets and also explains how the satellites of the "terrestrial" planets such as Earth or Pluto came into being.
Image: Giant filament seen on the sun Feb 12, 2015 Image: Giant filament seen on the sun Credit: NASA/SDO A dark, snaking line across the lower half of the sun in this Feb. 10, 2015 image from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) shows a filament of solar material hovering above the sun's surface. SDO shows colder material as dark and hotter material as light, so the line is, in fact, an enormous swatch of colder material hovering in the sun's atmosphere, the corona. Stretched out, that…
July 2010 A Giant Planet for Beta Pic Credit: A.-M. Lagrange, D. Ehrenreich (LAOG), et al., ESO A mere 50 light-years away, young star Beta Pictoris became one of the most important stars in the sky in the early 1980s. Satellite and ground-based telescopic observations revealed the presence of a surrounding outer, dusty, debris disk and an inner clear zone about the size of our solar system -- strong evidence for the formation of planets.
CSI: Milky Way - These days the Milky Way's core is a tame place, cosmically speaking. The central galactic black hole is a sleeping giant, stars are peacefully circling, little new star formation. But there is growing evidence that several million years ago the center was the site of celestial fireworks. A single event, a violent collision & merger of the galactic black hole & an intermediate-sized one in a small satellite galaxy, could have produced features that point to a more violent…
Giant iceberg's birth seen from spaceA process more than a decade in the making reached its climatic moment the week of July 16, when a giant iceberg finally broke away from the floating end of a Greenland glacier — and a passing satellite captured the drama on camera.
Very little is known about giant manta rays, fish up to 25 feet wide that glide through the ocean like giant underwater bats. Now, in the first study using satellite tracking of the creatures, scientists have teased out a few secrets, including that the beasts travel a lot. The new study tracked six manta rays — four females, one male and a juvenile (undetermined sex) — for two months off #Mexico 's Yucatan Peninsula.
The Petermann Glacier grinds and slides toward the sea along the northwestern coast of Greenland, terminating in a giant floating ice tongue. Like other glaciers that end in the ocean, Petermann periodically calves icebergs. A massive iceberg, or ice island, broke off of the Petermann Glacier in 2010.
