F/Sgt Geoffrey "Sammy" Allard appears from the cockpit of Hurricane Mk I VY-H after returning from a sortie to RAF Castle Camps in July 1940. The 28-year-old Yorkshireman accounted for 11 of 44 enemy aircraft claimed destroyed by No 85 Squadron RAF in August. Commissioned on 17 August and promoted to acting flight lieutenant on 8 September, The A Flight leader was awarded a Bar to his DFM on 13 September and the DFC on 8 October.
