I am so tired of hearing right wing politicians refer to Refugees and Immigrants as a scourge as invaders as something we need to protect ourselves from. They are People. They are Human Beings. They are so many of them only wee children. Rather I want to hear my political leaders explain how they are trying to help these people who have had to flee their homes with absolutely nothing. Could you bear being in the freezing streets with your child. Would you not expect your neighbours to help?…

28 August 2013 - One million child refugees have now fled the escalating war in Syria. Fatima, 10, and her parents escaped Syria’s conflict-affected Baba Amr district of Homs and now live in an enclosed room atop a roof in Mafraq, Jordan. “We don’t have water. I get it from the neighbours,” she said. Sometimes her family is also without food. “I miss Syria. I was very happy...My school was very beautiful.” Fatima dreams of one day becoming a doctor. ©UNICEF/Lucy Lyon

The children of #Aleppo, and #Syria, are living through a horrific nightmare. We call on all warring parties to allow the immediate evacuation of children from East Aleppo in safety and in dignity. We also urge all warring parties grant unconditional access to aid workers to provide lifesaving assistance. Pictured, 10-year-old Ahmed lives with over 6,000 other displaced people in the Jibreen, a former warehouse turned in to a shelter. With both parents dead and no other relatives to look…

Meet Qari Aqeel. In Pakistan, where religious belief and polio eradication are often intertwined, Qari Aqeel teaches children the fundamentals of Islam in a Karachi madrassa. He also teaches their parents, from his own painful experience, what it is like to live with polio – and from an Islamic perspective, why vaccinating their children against the disease is so important. Watch this video to see just how persuasive – and inspiring – he is: http://uni.cf/10fBPfl © UNICEF Pakistan video…

At age 10, Farzana was engaged to a 50-year-old man, who paid a bride price of $9,000 to her cash-strapped father –– a not uncommon fate for girls in Afghanistan. “I was crying very hard and telling my parents that I don’t want to go through with this,” recalls Farzana. With the help of her mother and the Child Protection Action Network –– a UNICEF-supported grassroots network –– three months of dialogue resulted in a returned dowry and a cancelled wedding.
