To the casual observer, the viceroy initially looks like a monarch butterfly. They are, however, somewhat smaller, have fast erratic flight and a black line crossing the veins of their hindwings. Their host plants often are poplar or willow trees. Since willows contain salicylic acid, a compound in aspirin, the larvae and adults are bitter-tasting, which gives them a form of protection from predation.
