Hubert Robert - A GRAND STAIRCASE - signed and dated middle right on column: H. Robert/1763 oil on canvas ; 15 3/4 by 33 1/4 in.; 40.2 by 84.3 - This painting, with it's poetic atmosphere and fluid brushwork, epitomizes the best of Robert’s oeuvre. It dates from towards the end the artist’s lengthy sojourn in Italy, between 1754-1765, a period which was instrumental in shaping both his style and his reputation.
