Claudette Colvin (born 5 Sept 1939) Pioneer of the African-American civil rights movement. She was the first person to resist bus segregation in Montgomery, Alabama, preceding the better known Rosa Parks incident by nine months. The 1956 court case stemming from her refusal to give up her seat on the bus, ended bus segregation in Alabama. The efforts of the teenaged, unwed and pregnant Colvin were not publicised as she was considered unsuitable to represent the NAACP movement at that time.

Nine months before Rosa Parks’ famous bus boycott, Colvin at 15 refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. She was inspired to stand up for her rights after learning about African American leaders in school. A courageous teenager.
