Kids are so lazy these days. Ridiculously young coal miner, USA, early 1900s | history | child labour | pipe | childhood lost
8 year old Coal Miner.. unfortunately, there were no child labor laws. It seems if you were able to walk, you were able to work.
The REAL Hunger Games. >> 8 year old Coal Miner <<< Shows just how lovely "the Capitol" is to District 12. Kids go to school until they're 16/17 in that book, mostly "learning about coal mining"! Shows readers don't care about realistic details if you entertain them enough! Something I need to remember when I'm being all perfectionist realist!

8 year old Coal Miner// It must have been nice to have kids that weren't freeloaders. Hey son, lets go have a drink after my nap. You're buyin.
8 year old coal miner, USA, early 1900’s.Children were cheap labor in the mines. He cleaned and played the part of a canary (kids were easier to replace than good miners). Probably Finnish or Swedish & indentured to the company for paying his father's debts to the company store.
Eight year old coal miner, USA, early 1900’s.Someone just made up the caption -- this is almost certainly just a little boy dressed up in a costume. 1. Child laborers didn't have families who could afford a studio portrait (and if they did, it would have been in his good clothes 2. Child mine workers didn't use picks, they did scut work. (This kid couldn't even have lifted that pick.)
Miner Boy: I put this picture under Just History, some say it a photo of a kid made up some say it is a minor boy! You decide I really don't care! Children were cheap labor in the mines. This boy spent 10 hours a day in that outfit with only the light from that tallow wick lamp. He cleaned & played the part of a "canary" (kids were easier to replace than good miners). He was probably Finnish or Swedish & indentured to the company for the purpose of paying his fathers debts. The unions fought bloody battles to get these children out of the coal mines. This little guy worked (& likely died) in Utah or Colorado mines / Scott Cooper

Coal Miners. End of the shift.
Wattis, Utah Coal Mine In 1953, miners at the Lion Coal Mine in Wattis, Utah broke into an already existing system. The coal found in these tunnels was so old & useless for burning. Further exploration by scientists the University of Utah revealed not only the tunnels but centralized rooms where coal was brought prior to being taken to the surface. The tunnels were about 5-6' high & one 8' tunnel was 8500 ft long, following coal seams as we do today. No American Indians ever used coal.

Collier - noun: 1. A coal miner. 2.A ship for carrying coal. A.Word.A.Day (July 13, 2011): canary in a coal mine
A coal miner with the last canary to be used down underground. Canaries were used in the coal mines, to detect methane gas. If the canary died, the miners knew to run out of the mine, or they would die, too!
A coal miner with the last canary to be used down underground - 1986: Coal mine canaries made redundant. More than 200 canary birds are being phased out of Britain's mining pits, according to new plans by the government.
A coal miner with the last canary to be used down underground. What is our canary in the coal mine? Maybe it's already dead. Or maybe we forgot to pay attention to how it was doing.
A coal miner and his canary. Canarys were used in coal mines as early warning systems for toxic gas build up. The gas would affect the bird before it killed the miners thus warning them to the dangerous levels in time to evacuate the mine. They were used until 1987 in British coal mines. The phrase "canary in a coal mine" is derived from this meaning a person or thing which serves as an early warning of an impending crisis.

"Hashima was originally purchased by Mitsubishi to be run as a coal mining facility. Just off the coast of Nagasaki, Hashima had the first concrete buildings constructed in Japan. For nearly one hundred years, Hashima enjoyed prosperity while the coal mines flourished. In the 1960’s petroleum started to replace coal for energy, and coal mines started closing around the country. By 1974 Mitsubishi announced it was closing the mine, and it has been uninhabited ever since."
