Catherine Ann Silva, who volunteered 4 1/2 months at the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital, brings her family to meet Edna, "the woman who changed my life," when Edna visits the Los Angeles Skirball Institute Half The Sky Exhibit.
Since she retired from her career at the World Health Organization, Edna Adan has devoted her personal resources (her savings, energies, and network) to create a maternity hospital and schools for health workers in Somaliland. Adan is determined to train 1,000 midwives to post throughout the country -- another step to ease the desperate plight of mothers. She has received the Legion of Honor (French knighthood) for her ongoing work.
I feel very proud that my counseling helped a mother to save her baby from severe malnutrition and possibly even death. I am also grateful to Save the Children’s for teaching me how to do this important, lifesaving work.
