Style Icon Jackie Kennedy Onassis As First Lady, Jackie was thrust into the spotlight. It was old family friend, couturier Oleg Cassini who put her signature look together having persuaded the first lady that she should use him as the creator of her total look, a decision that proved pivotal – setting the style for the 1960s with her clean suits, knee length skirts, 3/4 sleeves on notch-collar jackets, sleeveless A-line dresses, above-the-elbow gloves and famous pillbox hats.

The First Lady, Michelle Obama is being touted as the new fashion icon. We have been following her every fashion move she makes and approving of everything she wears. Michelle embodies classic beauty, sophistication and timeless style. While I'm being completely enthralled into all of Michelle's monumental fashion moments I couldn't help but remember the political style icons before her. The style icons attached to political figures that had you forgetting about things like the G20 summit and made you more interested in what designer they chose to wear. Some of Hollywood's over-stylized actresses should take a lesson from these women. Carolyn Bessette (1966-1999) I still remember that Saturday morning when John F. Kennedy Jr.'s plane went missing off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. John's wife Carolyn Bessette was on the plane with her sister Lauren. Their plane crashed reportedly because of poor flight conditions. The plane was found days later. Carolyn was only 33.Carolyn was voted the "Ultimate Beautiful Person"in high school and worked for Calvin Klein in the PR department. Carolyn was called the next Jackie and was intensely private. Her understated glamour and sophisticated nature was adored by the fashion world and she was hunted relentlessly by the media. Carolyn's life was over too quickly. Her effortless beauty and polished look was elegant and she proved less is more. The photos below were taken over 10 years ago and any of the looks could still be worn today. Carolyn's good friend Narciso Rodriguez designed her wedding dress. The dress made a name for the young designer at the time. Princess Diana 1961-1997 Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis 1929-1994

Recently the Reelz television channel did a mini series on The Kennedys. Although I wasn't sure how accurate Katie Holmes' accent was, I found the series very addicting and an interesting way to get a closer glimpse into this 'royal' family, the pressures they faced, the relationship between the President and his wife, Jackie's efforts to always put her family first, despite all sacrifices and hopefully gave me a realistic glimpse into life of The Kennedys. I got my fill of history and another look at Jackie's fabulous clothing selections. That woman sure knew how to dress and carried herself so perfectly as the First Lady. It inspired me to pull out a coffee table book that I cherish called "A Thousand Days of Magic: Dressing Jacqueline Kennedy for the White House" by Oleg Cassini. Cassini who was the creator of the "Jackie look" made the First Lady one of the best-dressed women in the world and a glamourous icon of the Kennedy era. He designed over 300 outfits for Jackie Kennedy-coats, dresses, evening gowns, suits, and day wear. He also coordinated every detail of her wardrobe, from shoes and hats to gloves and handbags. This book is a must-have to add to your coffee book collection and gives wonderful accounts of Jackie's letters to her world class designer! My parents gave me dvds of the series Mad Men when they came to visit for the cherry blossoms and I think that will have to be the next series I get into, what could be better than steamy love triangles, wonderful wardrobes and past eras in time :)

Jacqueline Kennedy: In Her Own Words airs tonight on ABC I do love a fashion icon, especially one from the 1950s or 1960s.  I find the ladylike fashions {and manners} of this era gorgeous and inspiring.  One of the biggest American fashion icons ever, if not the biggest, was Miss Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.  As First Lady in the early ‘60s, Jackie never took a fashion misstep.  From pillbox hats to pearls, and shift dresses to suits, she was always put together ~ the perfect politician’s wife.  Together with her husband, they became the closest thing America has ever had to our own royal family.  After the White House years, the widowed and remarried Jackie O continued to be a fashion inspiration, now in slim-fit t-shirts, tailored pants {skinny leg and flared}, glamorous head scarves, and of course, those sunglasses. But Jackie Kennedy Onassis was more than just a fashion plate ~ most of us just never got to see the woman behind the couture.  Tonight, however, we are invited in Jackie’s private world, as ABC airs it’s two-hour special Jacqueline Kennedy:  in her own words.  We will hear for the first time about Jackie’s experiences in the White House, in Jackie’s voice.   Jackie recorded over eight hours worth of interview tapes several months after her husband’s death, and instructed that the tapes not be released until “the appropriate time”.   Her children, John Jr and Caroline, read transcripts of the death shortly after their mother’s death, and Caroline finally listened to the audio tapes recently. In the tapes, Jackie talks with her interviewer about a range of topics, from what it was like to transition to the White House {she did not want to embarrass or disappoint her husband, and was thrilled for his sake when people took a liking to her}, to her husband's feelings about vice-president Lyndon Johnson {he wasn't a fan}, to their private conversations during the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis {she was determined to stand by her husband, literally and physically, in the event of a nuclear war; "...I just want to be with you, and I want to die with you, and the children do too ~ than live without you"}. So I invite fans of fashion, politics, and history to watch with me tonight as the incomparable Diane Sawyer and ABC bring us “Jacqueline Kennedy: in her own words”.  Democrat or Republican, Kennedy fan or not, young or old ~ I think we are all about to become privy to some pretty fascinating information from the mouth and mind of one of our country’s most inspirational women. xoxo Bean {photo credits: dailymischief.com; artinthedeal.blogspot.com; lvloves.blogspot.com; habituallychic.blogspot.com; just-chic.blogspot.com; thefashioncaucus.wordpress.com}
