    Gilbert Stuart - (1755 - 1828) - An American Painter from Rhode Island - Widely considered to be one of America's foremost portraitists. His best known work, "George Washington Unfinished: 1796" - the unfinished portrait of George Washington that is sometimes referred to as The Athenaeum, was begun in 1796 and left incomplete at the time of Stuart's death in 1828. The image of George Washington featured in the painting has appeared on the United States one-dollar bill for over one century.

    In 1785, five years before Rhode Island ratified the Constitution, Bristol, RI (1680) began commemorating the 4th of July. Rev Dr Henry Wight, Pastor-First Congregational Church (1680) a Harvard Graduate and Revolutionary War Veteran established what is now referred to as the Patriotic Exercises. These exercises focused on remembering and honoring all the Revolutionary War veterans had done in establishing our new nation. It is the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the country.
