John Smith, Cass Lake, Minn., Feb. 6 – Ga-Be-Nah-Gewn-Wonce, also known as John Smith, a Chippewa Indian reputed to be 137 years old, died after a week’s illness with pneumonia. (Photo courtesy mnhs.org) Smith, whose Indian name means “Wrinkled meat,” had been very active in late years. A year ago he became totally blind, but his mind remained clear to the last, and he often recalled the days when he was a scout for the Chippewas in the wars with the Sioux.

"John Smith". Oldest living Indian, 131 years old. As a Native American, I think it's disgraceful that this poor Native man had to die being called a Caucasian name like "John Smith". Obviously, at 131 years old he would have been born with a Native American Indian name - but those names were stripped from the Native people when they were forcibly thrown in boarding schools, prison camps, and Reservations by the Whites - a disgraceful part of U.S. history.
