      The Wounded Knee Massacre December 29, 1890 Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation South Dakota ~ The 7th Cavalry opened fire indiscriminately, killing men, women, and children. Surviving Lakota fled, but cavalrymen pursued and killed many who were unarmed. 250 Lakota had been killed and wounded. Twenty soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor. The NSAI condemned the awards and called on the government to rescind them. The site has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
