    The original, and very first Ferris Wheel premiered at The World's Fair: Columbian Exposition. This was a World's Fair held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. I just finished reading a book about this (The Devil In the White City, by Erik Larson), so I'm frolicing in seeing more photos of the Fair right now.

    The original Ferris Wheel, built by by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., sometimes also referred to as the Chicago Wheel, was the late coming, unexpected centerpiece of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Intended to rival the 1889 Paris Exposition’s 1,063 ft Eiffel Tower, the Ferris Wheel was the Columbian Exposition’s largest attraction, with a height of 264 ft.

The first Ferris Wheel at the 1893 Columbian International Exposition in Chicago. It was designed by George W. G. Ferris, Jr., the younger brother of Margaret Ferris Dangberg. G. W. G. Ferris grew up in Carson Valley, Nevada, and Margaret's husband, H. F. Dangberg, financed his young brother-in-law's engineering education.
