An artist must study his subject, get a firm sense of it, and find a way to express himself forcefully and with distinction. Taste is the best judge, but it is rare. Art is accessible to only a very small number of people. The artist must shun opinions not based on the intelligent observation of essentials.

"Colour possesses me. I don't have to pursue it. It will possess me always, I know it. That is the meaning of this happy hour: Colour and I are one. I am a painter." Paul Klee
Paul Klee (1879– 1940), was a Swiss painter. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Was also a student of orientalism. A natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually got deep into color theory, writing about it extensively; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory, are held to be as important for modern art as Da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting for the Renaissance. He taught at the German Bauhaus school.

PAUL GAUGIN (Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin), French Artist (1848-1903). French Post-Impressionist, who was not well known until after his death. He was recognized for his use of colors and synthetist style that was different from Impressionism. He was 30 years old and a stockboker when he started painting. It was a quarrel between Gaugin and VanGogh which prompted VanGogh to cut his ear off. Gaugin left France in 1895 and spent the rest of his life in Tahiti and Marqueses.

Paul Gauguin París, 1848 -1903
Gauguin was five years older than Vincent. He and Vincent van Gogh became artists full time after they had worked other jobs. They both became so devoted and hardworking, art to them was a religion. Gauguin was mentored by Pissarro and met Vincent in Paris at the free studio.
