Caroline Herschel was the first woman to discover a comet. Her story is kind of a Cinderella one - deformed by typhus as a child, her parents expected she would have to work as a maid for the rest of her life. But when her brother started taking her along on astronomical outings, she found she had a gift. One of the first women honored by the Royal Astronomical Society, Caroline discovered multiple comets and nebulae.
