Alexander Archer Vandegrift (March 13, 1887 - May 8, 1973) was a general in the United States Marine Corps. He commanded the 1st Marine Division to victory in the Battle of Guadalcanal; for his actions at Guadalcanal, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He later served as the 18th Commandant of the Marine Corps; and was the first Marine to hold the rank of four-star general while on active duty. American and Marine Hero!
John Basilone (November 4, 1916 – February 19, 1945) was a United States Marine Gunnery Sergeant who received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. He was the only enlisted Marine in World War II to receive the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross.
