Monument to Simpson and his Donkey, an Australian War Memorial - photo by Jerrye & Roy Klotz MD; John Simpson (Kirkpatrick) was an Australia/New Zealand army field ambulance stretcher bearer during the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey during WWI (1915). He was known for his bravery and compassion as he used a donkey (Murphy or Duffy, depending on the source) to rescue wounded soldiers while under fire. He was fatally wounded after 3 weeks.
