In 1962, Joseph Koudelka embarked on an eight-years’ project, a photo-essay in the tradition of Life magazine on the Gypsies of Czechoslovakla. Composed of portraits where the sitters were facing the camera, Koudelka dealt with the daily lives of Gypsies. Completely aware of the photographer’s presence and accepting of it, he was allowed into world very few non-Gypsies know from the inside.
