VINTAGE CAR 004 by petronellavanree

Photograph of a Pullman porter. Pullman porters were men hired by George Pullman to work on the railroads as porters on sleeping cars. George Pullman sought 10,000 former slaves to work on his sleeper cars, requiring them all to answer by the name of George. On August 25, 1925, 500 porters met in Harlem, NY under the leadership of A. Philip Randolph, demanding equal pay, better working conditions and eventually formed the first black union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.
