River in Å, Lofoten Islands, Norway #travel

  • Kate Magurn

observe killer whales. The number of sightings in some areas has recently declined, but not in the magical Lofoten islands, an archipelago above the Arctic Circle. Their nutrient-rich and deep waters mean that you are sure of a sighting – and you'll need to travel just six nautical miles offshore, a one-hour boat trip. Late October to mid-January is the time to go, when the whales follow shoals of Atlantic herring (there is also the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights).
