Peacock Mantis Shrimp. Looks sure are deceiving here because this guy is what's known as a smasher, with club shaped raptorial appendages that it uses to repeatedly smash its prey until it can gain access to the soft tissue for consumption. It is reported to have a "punch" of over 50mph. The fastest punch of any living animal.

The Mantis Shrimp has the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom. While humans only have 3 color receptive cones that allow us to see color, the Mantis Shrimp has 16 color receptive cones! Imagine all the types of colors they can see!

Mantis shrimps are alien-looking crustaceans with a fantastic, bright colouration

Mantis Shrimp . Probably the best eyesight in the entire animal kingdom. Each of the eyes has three visual centers, making them the only animal in the world to have trinocular vision...even if they close one eye. Interesting info at this site.

Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus) coming up to defend its hole.

'A shrimp guards her eggs in this close-up underwater photograph. But the bright colours of the peacock mantis mask a fearsome defence - a punch that feels like being shot by a .22 calibre pistol, and has been known to crack glass in aquariums.' Photo by Jeffrey Chua de Guzman.
