    This is a 1935 Indian Head Nickel. This design was produced from 1913 to 1938. They are referred to as Buffalo or Indian Head nickels. The buffalo is supposedly modeled after a buffalo at the New York Central Park Zoo named "Black Diamond".

Hobo Nickels from the early 1900's. The Buffalo Head nickel was particularly popular because of its larger size and carving or engraving surface. Called a Hobo nickel becaus they were more likely to carry coins.

Hobo Nickels. The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. The term hobo nickel is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations. Due to its low cost and portability, this medium was particularly popular among hobos, hence the name.
