a whole punch cloud in the sun set

  • Linda Bass

A fallstreak hole, also known as a hole punch cloud, punch hole cloud, canal cloud or cloud hole, is a large circular or elliptical gap, that can appear in cirrocumulus clouds. Such holes are formed when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing but the water has not frozen yet. When ice crystals do form it will set off a domino effect, causing the water droplets around the crystals to evaporate: this leaves a large, often circular, hole in the cloud. Punch hole clouds, also known as fallstreak hole are large circular clearings that can appear in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds. Such holes are formed when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing but the water has not frozen yet due to the lack of ice nucleation particles. When a portion of the water does start to freeze it will set off a domino effect causing the water vapor around it to freeze and fall to the earth as well. This leaves a large, often circular, hole in the ...

This is a hole punch cloud it is a large circular or elliptical gap, that can appear in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds. Such holes are formed when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing but the water has not frozen yet due to the lack of ice nucleation particles. When ice crystals do form it will set off a domino effect, due to the Bergeron process, causing the water droplets around the crystals to evaporate: this leaves a large, often circular, hole in the cloud.

Fallstreak hole, this is a rare meteorological phenomenon called a skypunch. Ice crystals form above the high-altitude cirro-cumulo-stratus clouds, then fall downward, punching a hole in the cloud cover.

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me." (Psalm 23)

This is a rare meteorological phenomenon called a skypunch. When people see these, they think it's the end of the world. Ice crystals form above the high-altitude cirro-cumulo-stratus clouds, then fall downward, punching a hole in the cloud cover. Freakishly weird!

Punch Hole Clouds may appear as a circular or oval holes in a layer of supercooled clouds. Sometimes they assume a form of a perfect circle and persist for quite a long time, drifting together with the cloud layer. One explanation seems to blame the air traffic (the jet contrail intersections) combined with a thermal inversion (a circular motion of a rising warm air). (Image credit Joel Knain)

A rare cloud formation known as a fallstreak hole. After water droplets in the clouds begin to freeze and grow, as ice crystals, they fall from the cloud and leave behind a hole.

GOOD MORNING !! It's a perfect day because it's God's gift. A beautiful day is waiting for you. ;)

Altocumulus undulatus clouds at Abruzzo national park, Italy. This cloud formation consists of parallel bands of cumulus clouds, occuring when wind shear affects a layer of altocumulus
