The Book Bucket List To Tackle Before You Turn 30 #refinery29 http://www.refinery29.com/best-books-millenials-reading-list#slide37 Silver Sparrow, Tayari Jones What: A story about a man with two families, one public, one secret, told by his daughters, only one of whom knows the whole story. Why: Because truly wise coming-of-age stories should be collected like rubi.

Silver Sparrow is Jones’ third novel. Set in Atlanta during the 1980’s, this is a tale about two teenage daughters, Dana and Chaurisse, who share one bigamist father. Their stories are divided equally and told in separate narratives which play out beautifully. This allows the reader to grow along with each girl, to ache for their yearnings, and to root for them to acquire what both of them want: to feel validated. The novel opens with Dana’s story and she hits us hard with the first line: “My Father, James Witherspoon, is a bigamist.” Dana is the secret yet she knows everything. She follows behind her mother and “surveils” the legitimate family. This encourages Dana to pursue her half-sister more aggressively and, on purpose, to cross paths with her. The question of why her and not me smolders inside of her and she will not have peace until that question is answered. Troubled, we like Dana. We want her to win. She is a pretty girl as well as clever. At a science fair, she is questioned by the judges if she was capable of creating her project, a cruel stereotype that pretty, smart girls know all about. Part two, we hear Chaurisse. She begins her story by sharing her mother’s beginning with James, a marriage at age fourteen to a man that got her in the family way. Chaurisse tells the history of James and is in the dark about his second family living on the other side of Atlanta. She is the plain girl with bad hair. She wants to be talented but so far she hasn’t shown any gifts. Lonely, our hearts break for Chaurisse, especially when she realizes in kindergarten that she’ll never be one of the girls who will play an angel in the Christmas pageants. Unaware of Dana’s true intentions, she ignorantly welcomes her half-sister into her life and home in hopes of making her first true friend. Silver Sparrow will leave you wanting more. It’s full of intrigue. There will be plenty to discuss with your book club or a fellow reader. The complicated structure of relationships between fathers and daughters, sibling rivalry, what a secret can do to one’s psyche, is James a villain, how much can one forgive, and, of course, the title which I’ll leave to the reader to discover. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption
Oct 2011 Book Club. Great read!
Book Club, Olympic Runner, Air Force, Reading List, Amazing Book, Favorite Book, Laura Hillenbrand, Dust Cover
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand - I've been told by a friend that it's one of the best books he has ever read. Adding it to my must read list!
The book jacket describes the contents as “A World War II story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption.” It is all of that and more. The protagonist is Louis Zamperini who, at the hands of his Japanese captors, survived torture, starvation and sadism that plumb the depths of human evil. It is also the story of the men who endured those horrific conditions with him.
Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken is an incredible biography of Louis Zamperini - an Olympic runner, Air Force pilot, Japanese prisoner of war, recovered alcoholic, husband, and minister. It's a must-read!
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand- a World War 2 survival story and the biography of famous olympic runner Louis Zamperini
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand - kind of looking forward to this movie. A true story of a Berlin Olympics participant who became a WWII airman, shot down, left adrift & captured by Japanese forces. Amazing book! Highly recommend!
Unbroken - Book review - Laura Hillenbrand did so much research for this book that Louis Zamperini claimed she knew more about his life afterwards than he did. Amazing book about an amazing man, who survived unimaginable horrors, and came back stronger than ever.
This is an amazing book. Just finished reading it for my book club. Louie's story is truly inspirational.
As reported in an exclusive for the Hollywood Reporter, Ethan and Joel Coen "have been tapped to rewrite Unbroken, the adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand’s 2010 book, for Universal -- which has been trying to mount a Zamperini story in some form or fashion for decades Universal picked up the rights to the book in January 2011, initially for Francis Lawrence to direct." Angelina Jolie came on board in December, and has reportedly been looking for "top flight" writers for this project. She has spent weeks searching for "top-flight writers" to tackle the project. Read the entire article here. I originally spotlighted UNBROKEN here on Novel Chatter in November, 2010 and am still mesmerized by Louis Zamperini. Here's a bit about this amazing book: On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War. The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit. Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit. Published November 16th 2010 by Random House

You better not cry - Augusten Burroughs - Ok, yes I admit it, I pinned this because of the book cover
This was my first Augusten Burroughs book....found it while stranded in the Atlanta airport for 6.5 hours waiting for a flight with nothing to read! An easy and fun read and a great way to get in the christmas spirit and relax!!!!
I have enjoyed all Augusten Burrough's books; this particular book had me laughing out loud on a flight.
A description of families and holidays you'll ever read.Sounds like a fun book to read around the holidays.
January 2014 Bookies Book Club You better not cry : stories for Christmas / Augusten Burroughs.
YOU BETTER NOT CRY (PART VII) I was at the airport in Detroit when something caught my eye. I was dumbfounded. It was Burrough's book with SANTA FLASHING! Now I was pissed. However, I decided to let it go, even though Steve Snider all but ripped off our idea. That is, until a few weeks ago when I came across the cover in the Regional Design Annual of PRINT. Snider's comment: "...A flashing Santa seemed to strike the right chord." Sounds more like a pirated tune if you ask me.
I enjoyed my 1st Augusten Burroughs book, and this was available at the library, so I tried it. Didn't enjoy it quite as much - I didn't know who AB was when I read the last book, have now learned, and knowing what a crazy life he had, I'm torn between what's hilarious and what is terribly sad and disturbing. Overall - this is funny! He's taken the tragedy of his youth and shared in a way that you can't help but to laugh with him. Humor can be a coping device, and hopefully the author is coping.

Chelsea Handler.....funniest book
It's Sunday night and I just finished reading this book! I have never been a reader! never! I hate reading and it really bugs me how people always say that books are better than movies! I had started reading this book like literally 6 months ago and put it down on my computer desk and forgot about it until about a week ago. I had a sudden urge to read last week some time. I just wanted to read something. So I picked this book up off my desk and read about 20 pages a night and just finished it! :D It is hilarious! I love the way that the book is written. Each Chapter is like it's own story so it doesn't feel like you're reading about ONE thing the entire book. It's a different incident of her life in each chapter. One chapter may be about a one night stand and another chapter may be about a trip she took to another country. You never know with her! Have any of you guys ever read Chelsea Handler's books? Or even watched her comedy show on The E channel? She is so funny! I wouldn't recommend this book to those of you who are strongly against foul language and what not, but if it doesn't bother you then read this book nowww! She has many other books like: This is her first book. I read out of order, but that's okay. She is hilarious and I can't wait to read her other books! I may actually like to read now! It's a good hobby I need to pick up because my vocabulary is probably equal to a 6th graders && that is awful! I admit. xoxo Lauren

Reconstructing Amelia tells the story of a mother trying to piece together the last few weeks of her daughter’s life in the wake of her suicide. It gets you thinking about how well you can really ever know someone. The mystery as to whether Amelia did kill herself will keep you gripped until the end
A lawyer and single mother is told that her daughter has committed suicide. Later she comes to doubt this and tries to discover what she did not know about her child. There are some really sad moments. It is very American book with its privileges and societies but an interesting read.
Single mother and lawyer Kate is in the meeting of her career when she is interrupted by a phone call. Her daughter Amelia has just been suspended from her exclusive prep school. When Kate eventually arrives at Grace Hall an hour later, she is greeted by the news that no mother ever wants to hear.
Single mother discovers her daughter has committed suicide. However an anonymous text stating 'Amelia didn't jump' leads Kate to investigate the last few days of her daughters troubled life.
Reconstructing Amelia, Kimberly McCreight - Reconstructing Amelia tells the story of a mother trying to piece together the last few weeks of her daughter’s life in the wake of her suicide. It gets you thinking about how well you can really ever know someone. The mystery as to whether Amelia did kill herself will keep you gripped until the end (which I personally have mixed feelings about, but that’s another matter). —Michelle O’Brien

I read this book after reading a review about it on shelovestoread’s blog. And oh my god am I pleased I did. This book follows the story of Amelia and her mother Kate in the lead up to and aftermath of Amelia’s apparent suicide. Kate is a hardworking single mother who does not get to spend the time she would like with her daughter. Amelia attends a private school where she has never seemed to quite fit in, until one day she is asked to join a secret society. A decision which will change her life forever. Kate and Amelia do however by all intents and purposes share a close relationship. But some times no matter how close of a relationship you may have, you might not know the other person as well as you thought you did! The story deals with the issues of social networking and the impact of groups and bullying at school and a mothers fight to find out the truth. I loved how this book flitted between Amelia and Kate’s own story, giving the reader the opportunity to discover and see the story unfold from both points of view. It was fascinating to see the conflicting opinions of Amelia and Kate on situations and events within the book as they happened. I was hooked from the beginning and could not put this book down. It was so well written and the plot so well thought out. Kimberly really nailed it! She managed to weave web of magic with her words, which built suspense and left me unable to stop thinking about the book long after I had finished reading it. The characters were believable and well developed. I found myself being able to relate to them easily, especially Amelia (I wasn’t a teenager that long ago). Life as a teenager is hard and the need to fit in and be liked is something that is …
The Lost Wife -- All I can say about this book is WOW! I read it in a matter of hours -- couldn't put it down..
