Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. "Strange book that is hard to get into but once you do, it takes you to very interesting places. A meditation on mortality in the end. Our book club had a very spirited discussion about "the meaning of life" after reading this book. Highly recommended." a favorite book: Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut
Breakfast of Champions: I found this Vonnegut book both funny (ha-ha) and funny (weird). Worth a read.
Kurt Vonnegut’s black humor, satiric voice, and incomparable imagination first captured America’s attention in The Sirens of Titan in 1959 and established him as “a true artist” (The New York Times) with Cat’s Cradle in 1963. He was, as Graham Greene declared, “one of the best living American writers.” Mr. Vonnegut passed away in April 2007.Dwayne was a widower.....more on boikeno.com

Although Russian critics dismissed the novel on its publication as a "trifling romance of high life", Fyodor Dostoevsky declared it to be "flawless as a work of art". His opinion was shared by Vladimir Nabokov, who especially admired "the flawless magic of Tolstoy's style", and by William Faulkner, who described the novel as "the best ever written".

Recently, we stumbled upon this list of “fun” books that every woman should read in her 20s — needless to say, if you’re even a casual visitor to this space, the books (Confessions of a Shopaholic, Bitches on a Budget) aren’t exactly the ones we’d choose. So, perhaps rather predictably, we decided to put together our own list instead.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver: A teen book that is destined to be a movie. In the not-so-distant future, a life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy. The government can cure you before the "delirium" ruins your life, whether you want them to or not.
Delirium by Lauren Oliver. Book worth reading
Delirium by Lauren Oliver. Lena Holoway lives in a world where love is a disease... fortunately, scientists have found a cure for this "dreadful" thing. Lena looks forward to turning eighteen and receiving the cure... that is, until she falls in love... 95 days before her 18th birthday. www.goodreads.com
Adding this to my READING LIST (July, 2012): "Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that once love blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the government demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. A life without love is a life without pain."

Life's Melody // Phantom of the Opera book review
A powerful and intense tale of secrets and a hidden past, The Reader is a thrilling book. As a 15-year-old boy in postwar Germany, Michael Berg had a passionate affair with a mysterious, guarded woman twice his age that ended suddenly when she disappeared. Years later, Michael sees her again -- when she is on trial for a terrible crime.

the reader book
Michael is only 15 when he embarks on an affair with Hanna, a much older woman. Years later, as a law student observing a war crimes trial, Michael realises that the person in the dock is the woman he loved. Much of her behaviour during the trial does not make sense. But the suddenly it does - Hanna has not only committed a terrible crime, she is also concealing an even deeper secret. Published in 39 languages, THE READER combines German post-war guilt with a destructive love story.
The Reader - such a great book. Never saw the movie, but the book was really good!

Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire -- On seeing her portrait, a servant girl modelling for an artist in 17th century Holland realizes she is ugly. But the portrait opens her eyes to the world of art, she becomes a painter and is transformed by her work so that when a prince charming appears she is no longer ugly. #books #reading | A good revisionist fairy tale. Girl With A Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier. Read it with a book club 5/03. Rated it 4 out of 5. Enjoyed the art connection (about a girl in a Vermeer painting). The book's website features the other paintings that are mentioned. Vermeer is a bit of a pig of a person, though.
I read The Girl With a Pearl Earring few years ago, but time is the test of a good book....
