"The Handmaid's Tale" is a disturbing book about a dystopian society in what was once the United States.

Definitely a book worth reading. It is a It's been ages since I read this book, but I agree with Original Pinner: different kind of book and requires an open mind. But a great one none the less.

    Love Margaret Atwood.

Author Gregory McQuire's most acclaimed book. I loved it but recognize that McQuire's formula for retelling the classic fairy tales does not make great literature. If one did not know the old stories or, particularly' never seen the movie "The Wizard of Oz," his books would be incomprehensible. I give him credit for finding a device that works very well for him. BTW, I've seen the play 3 times - same critique: one wouldn't know WTH was going on if one had never seen WofO but who hasn't!
