Tuen Voeten 1994 - Mole People Upper West Side, NYC
Tunnel People or Mole People living in a tunnel underneath Manhattan's posh Upper West Side. They were evicted in 1996, but Amtrak and homeless organizations offered them alternative housing. Some succeeded in starting again above ground, while others failed & are living elsewhere underground. Photographer & cultural anthropologist Teun Voeten lived with & photographed them for 5 months. (There is concern as to how the homeless fared in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.)
